Happy Birthday Bro!

So besides today being the day after Christmas, today is also my brother's birthday. Those of you who are long followers know that I like Star Wars, but my brother is a total Star Wars nut. So in honor of his birthday, I'm sharing with all of you the funniest Star Wars fan film I've ever seen.

Enjoy!

A Christmas Carol

Today's topic is another Christmas classic: A Christmas Carol.

For those of you who don't know A Christmas Carol WAS originally a book penned by author Charles Dickens. And probably the shortest thing he ever wrote. But most people don't know the story of Scrooge and the ghosts of Christmas that way. Especially with Disney's new adaptation now in theaters. By the way, has anyone seen it yet? I want to know if it's worth seeing.

But back on topic. I wasn't an exception to this stereotype. And today's post isn't going to talk abut the book either. Instead we're going to discuss my experience with A Christmas Carol. It wasn't until middle school that I learned A Christmas Carol originally was a book. My first interaction was with this:

That's right, it's Mickey's Christmas Carol. Hey, you guys already know I'm a Disney nut, we're you surprised? This was my first Christmas Carol and it remains one of my favorites. I loved seeing all my favorite Disney characters pop up in this one. Although Pete as the Ghost of Christmas Future still creeps me out, and it gave me nightmares as a kid. I would fast forward through that part to the end until I was about 8 years old. I know, I'm a sissy. But at least I'm an unscared sissy!

It's a very kid-friendly adaptation (despite creepy Pete) for those of you who haven't seen it. And the good news is that it is now available on DVD as part of Disney Animation Collection 7: Mickey's Christmas Carol. I just ordered my copy and it should be here any day now!

Now, for those of you who are observant, you'll notice I didn't say Mickey's Christmas Carol was my all-time favorite version. Nope, that spot is reserved for A Muppet Christmas Carol:

Can I just say that Michael Caine as Scrooge is downright scary in this beginning? He was a perfect choice for the part. A Muppet Christmas Carol is everything you could wish for in a Muppet movie. It tells a lot more of the story (including the sad bits), but you have a lot of zany Muppet fun to break up the story and make it not so sad/scary. And I love the music too. And lets face it. Statler and Waldorf make pretty scary Marley ghosts.

This is by far one of my favorite Christmas traditions. Although I do occasionally miss some of my other Christmas movies each year, this is one I always watch. And sometimes multiple times. It's probably time for me to break down and buy the The Muppet Christmas Carol - Kermit's 50th Anniversary EditionDVD, since my old VHS tape is pretty much shot.

In closing, I leave you with one of my favorite parts of A Muppet Christmas Carol (if you're reading this in a feed you might need to click over to view it):

Guest Post: A Christmas Story

Today I'm happy to present a guest post by Elie of Ellz Reads. If you enjoy this post, make sure you head over to her blog and check it out. Elie is also the host of the upcoming 12 Blogs of Christmas event, so you can stay up to date with that by following her blog. So without further ado, take it away Elie!

With the arrival of the holiday season, brings the return of one of my favorite movies, A Christmas Story. This 80's comedy stole my heart the first time I saw it and continues to delight me year after year.

Ralphie, our pint sized hero, desperately wants a Red Rider BB gun for Christmas. The problem is, no one thinks it is safe. This hilarious comedy follows his quest for the perfect present. If you haven't seen this movie, I highly recommend it for your Holiday movie list.

So now I would like to present you with:

5 Things I Learned From A Christmas Story

1. Never stick your tongue to a flagpole in the middle of winter. IT WILL STICK! Ralphie dares his buddy Flick to try and well...
I think this speaks for itself. But, if you ever decide to dare your friends into trying this, you have to be specific in your wording. Only a "triple dog dare", the most serious of all dares, will do.

2. Bunny-faced footie pajamas with ears are cozy, but not fashionable. Yes, some people do look good in pink, but alas, the bunny slippers would definitely ruin a special moment with your significant other. You would always feel like you were being watched. Ralphie received his from his sweet Aunt Clara. awwww.

3. The occasional bar of soap won't kill, but I don't believe it will make you stronger. I am sure I am not alone when I admit that I have tasted a bar of soap or two. Ralphie spills a few choice words in front of his father and gets to sample the Palmolive. aagh, I prefer Dove myself.

4. Department store Santas, while their hearts are in the right place, are not the real thing. After waiting in line to see Santa for hours and hours, he got the boot. The real Santa would never do this.

5. Lastly, I learned that not all prizes are good. Ralphie's father won a "major award" and it turned out to be electric sex on a base. While it was good for a laugh, I don't think I would want this prize lighting my front windows. Did you know you can actually buy these?

So keep these little life lessons in mind, you never know when you will need them.

Happy Holidays!

A Charlie Brown Christmas

Kicking off A Shady Glade Christmas today is one of my all time holiday favorites, A Charlie Brown Christmas. I've probably talked about this before on the blog (can't find the post now), but it merits another visit.

Yes, Christmas just wouldn't be the same without the Peanuts gang. I've watched this movie every year at Christmastime for as long as I can remember. Even longer than Rudolph or Frosty the Snowman for that matter. Why you ask? Well, I had the tape of A Charlie Brown Christmas, and I didn't have the other two. So Charlie Brown got played year round, where I had to wait for all the other Christmas specials to come on TV.

But really, if you haven't seen this movie you need to stop reading and go watch it. It's on TV all the time this time of year and I'm sure you can find the whole thing on YouTube too. Really though, it's un-American. Which makes me think of something. For all those of you who are international readers, do they play this movie around Christmas in your neck of the woods?

When I was about 8 years old we ended up getting It's Christmastime Again, Charlie Brown. Doing some research it looks like this one is still only on VHS. Which is understandable. Although I loved spending another Christmas movie with Charlie Brown and crew, it just didn't have the magic that the original had.

So the bottom line? Watch A Charlie Brown Christmas this holiday. If you haven't seen it before, now is a good time to start.

Before I go, here's a bit of a Charlie Brown Christmas anecdote for you. When I was in 6th grade our elementary school decided to do A Charlie Brown Christmas for our winter play. I tried out for Lucy, but unfortunately didn't make it. I would have made a good Lucy. But one of the other girls already had the entire part memorized, and how can you compete with that?

Anyway, I digress. Although I didn't get my desired part, I DID end up in the play. Know which part I got? I was the Christmas tree. What Christmas tree you ask? You know. THIS one:
I've killed it...

Yeah. The scrawny one. My part consisted of standing in a corner of the stage until the end where I would "fall" over before getting spiffed up by the other characters. And I have a special treat for you. I only have one picture of me in my costume from this play. And I've decided to share it with all of you. But you have to promise not to laugh...

TA-DA! Sorry for the poor quality, it's a scan of my elementary school yearbook. Which is why there is also a banner behind my head. Yeah, my elementary school didn't have a huge yearbook budget. If you can't tell from the photo the costume consisted of a sandwich-board Christmas tree cutout shape and a cone hat. The back side was plain and had all these scraggly branches sticking out all over the place. And then as you can see, the front was all decorated with glitter and sequins to make it look like I had been decorated. So yes, I did spend most of the play with my back to the audience. Hey, it's a tough job, but someone had to do it. ;)

Anyway, anyone else out there count this among their favorite Christmas traditions? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Random Movie Clip: Night at the Museum

Yes, it's that time again. Here's a clip from one of my favorite movies, Night at the Museum. Larry is a night guard at the Musuem of Natural History. The cool thing is, everything in the Museum comes to life at night. Larry's been having a bit of trouble with Attila the Hun, and here's his attempt to finally make peace with the guy...

Of course, Night at the Museum is available from Amazon.com. That's where I got my copy, since you can get really good deals on DVD by checking the used copies. If you haven't seen it yet, you need to at least rent this movie. It's a good one!

Enchanted with"Enchanted"

So you’ve probably heard something about this new movie, Enchanted. Whatever you’ve heard, this is my advice:

Go see it. Now.

Okay, in all seriousness. I knew I was going to see it at one point because, after all, it is a Disney movie, and you all know how much I’m crazy for Disney. My expectations were completely blown of the water. I haven’t enjoyed seeing a movie like that since Pirates of the Caribbean.

Yes, it’s corny. Yes, it’s making fun of Disney stereotypes. Yes, the witch is ugly (well, really, what did you expect there?). But it is sooo good. I really can’t even put my finger on what I like about it, but I know I will be buying this one as soon as it comes out on DVD.

So go see it. Yes, it’s musical/romance/comedy/fairytale/culture shock/cheesy movie. But it’s a great one. Check out IMDB if you’re looking for a plot summary, because it’s altogether too complicated for me to explain without giving something away. And see it on the big screen if possible. You just can’t get the full experience otherwise.

Okay, you convinced me. For those of you who can’t click links, here’s a trailer for you to watch. But it truly doesn’t compare to the movie, so don’t use that as an excuse!
