  3. Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page

I think I'd like to get back in the habit of doing Teaser Tuesdays. We'll have to see what happens I guess...

Today's teaser comes from the book I'm currently reading/struggling through, Jennifer Donnelly's Revolution. I want to be able to like this one, and I love parts of it, but I'm not sure if I'm enjoying it as a whole yet. Only time will tell I guess. Anyway, here's the tease, from one of the parts I did enjoy (page 168):

I have stolen. I have deceived. I have damaged things and people. And yet nothing grieves me more than to think he now remembers that night.
And calls me a liar.

Teaser Tuesday: 10.19.10

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme (that I unfortunately forget to participate in weekly), hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
  1. Grab your current read
  2. Open to a random page
  3. Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  4. BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS!

I know, my participation Teaser Tuesday is sporadic. The problem is that usually by the time I remember it after finding something I want to share, it's already Wednesday. But never fear! Today, I'm sharing something from Richard Peck's new book Three Quarters Dead:

Anyway, I could feel Tanya from here, the tug of Tanya. The old woman has said, "Run for your life." And, really, wasn't I? What kind of life did I have without them?
Spooky, huh? This is turning out to be a great read for Halloween time.

Note: This quote is from an ARC copy, and may be different in the final print version.

I am doing a very bad thing. Despite the literally teetering piles of new books just begging to be reviewed, I am re-reading an old favorite of mine. I haven't picked this up since my sophomore year of high school. My teaser today comes from page 25 of Wolf Tower by Tanith Lee. As bit of background, the book is written formatted as Claidi's diary. Just in case the style seems a bit weird:

Daisy and I helped shake out JL's petticoat. Jade Leaf thrust us off, managing to poke Daisy in the eye.
"Oh you filthyword little sluts!" sqawked JL.
Outside, they'd be marching right under the window now.
I leapt away, dashed back the window, and looked down, calling as I did so, "Oh, madam, the Guards have a prisoner."
"Of course they have you extrafilthyword little pest. Leave that and come here. I'm covered in these filthyword-Claidi-doesn't-even-know things!"
I really am bad about giving you more than two sentences. Oh well. :)

My teaser today comes from page 155 of NERDS: National Espionage, Rescue, and Defense Society by Michael Buckley (some sentences edited out for brevity's sake):

"So, how do we get up to the roof?" Jackson asked, eyeing the building. It was easily ten feet tall.
"Like this," Flinch said as he grabbed Heathcliff and tossed him high into the air.
"No way are you doing that to me!" Jackson said.
"It's really safe," Duncan said, just before he was tossed as well.
"He's right," Flinch said. "I've only crippled three people. That's a very good percentage."
"Now, let's talk about this," Jackson said, but a moment later the boy's hands hefted him off the ground and flung him igh into the sky. Flinch's toss was perfect and Jackson came down on the roof like a feather. A barfing, crying feather--but a feather nonetheless.
Okay, so that was more than two sentences, but you had to read all of those to fully appreciate the situation. I am totally loving this book! I hadn't yet picked up Michael Buckley's other books (The Sisters Grimm) but now I think I will. After I finish this one of course!

My teaser this week comes from Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters by Jane Austen and Ben H. Winters:

"She still sang no shanties, turned no happy reels, as Elinor was accustomed to see her undertake at odd intervals..."
Okay, this is the second teaser from this book, but I'm still working on it. Most of the other things I've been reading lately are graphic novels for the Cybils, and those are kind of hard to tease. You miss so much without seeing the art that goes with the words. Anyway, I'm off to go read and see if I can't get through the book this week!

I've been slacking on these lately, but I actually have time today. Gasp! Shock! And other exclamations of surprise!

Anyway, here's my teaser for this week from Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters by Jane Austen and Ben H. Winters:

"I am persuaded that Mrs. Smith suspects his regard for Marianne, disapproves of it, and on that account is eager to get him away. Or, alternatively, he has in his quest for treasure disturbed the burial site of a pirate captain, and incurred the wrath of the pirate captain's ghost, who has thusly cursed him to wander the seven seas until fate should claim him. It's one of those two."

I haven't done one of these in awhile, but I actually have time this week! My teaser is from The Season by Sarah MacLean:

"The duchess was not in the mood to hear her daughter's feeble explanations. 'No buts, young lady. March up to your chamber, apologize to Eliza for her having to bother with you at this hour of the day, and Remove. That. Dress."

Who else has heard their mother speak in that tone? You know the one. Where. Every. Word. Is. It's. Own. Sentence. Oooh. I shiver just thinking about it.

    Teaser Tuesday: 3.31.09

Okay, I'll bite. This sounds like fun. So here's my teaser this week. It's from Backtracked by Pedro De Alcantara

From page 5 of the hardcover edition (I just barely started it):

"Soon it'd be five years since the towers went down, and Jimmy with them. Jimmy the All-American, Jimmy the Hero, Jimmy the Saint. Dying in your prime is a good career move. Nobody remembers your defects."

Okay, so that's more than two sentences. But I couldn't just stop in the middle of the thought. If you've been intrigued, follow the Amazon link below to find out more about Backtracked. And look for a review (someday) soon. I do have to finish the book first, after all!
