Waiting on Wednesday: 7.15.09

Wow! It's sure been a long time since I've done one of these. So let's bring it back with a bang. Here's a book I'm super, super excited for:

Ice by Sarah Beth Durst

About the Book (from the author's website): "When Cassie was a little girl, her grandmother told her a fairy tale about her mother, who made a deal with the Polar Bear King and was swept away to the ends of the earth. Now that Cassie is older, she knows the story was a nice way of saying her mother had died. Cassie lives with her father at an Arctic research station, is determined to become a scientist, and has no time for make-believe.

Then, on her eighteenth birthday, Cassie comes face-to-face with a polar bear who speaks to her. He tells her that her mother is alive, imprisoned at the ends of the earth. And he can bring her back--if Cassie will agree to be his bride.

That is the beginning of Cassie's own real-life fairy tale, one that sends her on an unbelievable journey across the brutal Arctic, through the Canadian boreal forest, and on the back of the North Wind to the land east of the sun and west of the moon. Before it is over, the world she knows will be swept away, and everything she holds dear will be taken from her--until she discovers the true meaning of love and family in the magical realm of Ice."

First of all, it's a fairytale retelling. So you know I'm totally there. Second of all, it's Sarah Beth Durst! Her books are amazing, so I know this is going to be great too. And Sarah is a great person, I love reading her blog. And thirdly, Tamora Pierce (one of my absolute favorite authors) gave it a great cover blurb again. And if Tammy likes it, I know I'm going to love it too. And, you know, I like the cover too (I know, I always talk about the gorgeous covers!) I. Can't. Wait!

Ice won't be released until October 6th. Majorly Sad Day. But you can currently pre-order your copy from Amazon.com, which makes things look up a little:

Tammy gave her approval? Now I'm even more excited! Although I was already hooked, I mean East of the Sun, West of the Moon retelling *and* glaciology? Seriously two of my favorite things!

P.S. Have you read East by Edith Pattou? Very good and the same fairy tale.

I haven't read East yet, although I do have a copy sitting my shelf staring at me right now. I have about six other books I have to finish first though. Le sigh...

You know, this cover always reminds me of the Golden Compass (the movie, I haven't read the book yet).
