June Updates

Okay, so here's the post of updates I mentioned yesterday. Hopefully I'll have the sidebars finished and updated with this stuff soon!

First of all, let's start with the sidebars I do have done. The Books Completed in 2009 in the right sidebar, and Winner's Circle in the left sidebar have both been completely updated. So enjoy looking at those.

Working on updates

So as I (finally) have a little time to work on the blog, I'm trying to get a few updates done. Looking over my archives, I noticed I didn't post any of my monthly updates except site searches. So I'm working on those, as well as updating/adding stuff to the sidebars. You'll also notice I finally had time to put the background to how it was pre-4th of July.

Guest Post: What is about vampires?

Today I'm happy to announce my first guest post. If you'd be interested in doing your own guest post, you can find all the details on the guest post policy page. And now here's the post. Take it away Jessica!

There's nothing better than a great vampire book for summer, am I right? Besides, vampires are everywhere. They've taken over every aspect of pop culture with the movie Twilight, and the soon to be released New Moon. They've taken over television with True Blood (and a new CW TV show, The Vampire Diaries, based on the YA books by L.J. Smith, premieres in the Fall). And have seriously dominated in books (hence this post). Lots of people may wonder why vampires are so popular, but I, being a vampire-addict myself, am not surprised in the least.

Vampires have the bad-boy/girl draw. They're mysterious, and keep us on the edge of our seats, flipping pages. The seductive part of being bitten is only part of the reason why people feel drawn to the dark, brooding creatures of the night.

Vampire books are full of action. People always seem to be fighting, or dying, or doing something that makes us glare menacingly at anyone who tries to interrupt our reading at that moment.
Because what's a great book without action? If nothing else, you have to admit that vamps deliver in that category.

Vampire books have TONS of variety. Vampires can sparkle in the sun, or turn to dust. You could get a vampire romance, or an action-packed vampire looking for revenge. A vampire who lives in an academy, or in Manhattan. I've read so many, but none of them blend together because they're all so different.

And besides, vampire books branch out to many different genres. Books about our favorite blood-suckers, turn into werewolf books, and that turns into witches, and that turns into fairies, and the chain goes on forever!

Some of my personal favorite vampire books deliver in all of these categories. I'd recommend them all in a heartbeat. They are: The Twilight Saga (unoriginal response, but I can't hide my love), The Vampire Diaries, The Evernight Academy Series, and the Blue Bloods series. (City of Bones also has vampires, but it's not the main attraction so I'll leave it out.) But there are still many vamp books that I've yet to read, so this could easily change!

From Bram Stoker to Anne Rice, vampires, along with other paranormal creatures, constantly keep us in suspense. They can be serious, big books, or light, fun reads, but we almost always love them. And for good reason. I mean come on, what's not to like?


Thanks for stopping by Jessica! Jessica from Shut Up! I'm Reading has been addictively reading for a couple of months, and has very recently devoted a YA book blog to said addiction. Her favorite genre (as you just read about) is paranormal. This is the teenager's first ever guest post.

More Twilight News

First of all, my hands are feeling much better now (still a little sore), so thank you very much to everyone who wished me well!

Secondly, I just found out some interesting news and had to share. Although at the rate these things travel, you probably already know...

Via Maw Books Blog, Twilight will be made into a graphic novel. I find this really interesting, because they seem to going with an Asian flair for the artwork. It always eyeopening to see a best loved novel turn into a graphic novel. GNs especially interest me, and I was able to be on the graphic novel Cybils committee for both 2006 and 2007.

I'll be keeping an eye on this one...

First of all, it's a fairytale retelling. So you know I'm totally there. Second of all, it's Sarah Beth Durst! Her books are amazing, so I know this is going to be great too. And Sarah is a great person, I love reading her blog. And thirdly, Tamora Pierce (one of my absolute favorite authors) gave it a great cover blurb again. And if Tammy likes it, I know I'm going to love it too. And, you know, I like the cover too (I know, I always talk about the gorgeous covers!) I. Can't. Wait!

Mondays and Contests

Hi everyone!

Sorry for the lack of updates recently. The past week was extremely busy because of some company that was visiting. I kind of threw a wrench into my blog updates.

So while I try to get back on track, I want to make an important announcement. Due to my changing schedule for the summer, Contest Monday will now be extended for two weeks indefinitely. This also helps with postage, because costs are getting a little steep lately. I want to discontinue this after the summer, since I know most of you enjoy seeing a new contest every week, but we'll have to see how my schedule works out. So a new Contest Monday will be posted today, and it will run for two weeks instead of one.

I still want to try and post something contest-related every week. So I'm alternating weeks with contests and contest roundups. Since a new contest will be posted later today, a new roundup will go up next week. And so on.

Review: Gettysburg The Graphic Novel

This is one of those books that’s kind of hard to summarize. Despite the title Gettysburg: The Graphic Novel, only half of the book is dedicated to the enormous and bloody battle that consisted of three days of fighting. The majority of the book looks at the aftermath of the fighting and the dedication of the battleground. Of course, you can’t really talk about Gettysburg without talking about Lincoln’s Gettysburg address. Each line of that famous speech is illustrated with its own picture, which of course takes up half the book by itself.

I do want to mention that although this book is really marketed towards younger readers, I would hand it over to them with some caution. Kids who don’t understand about war/death may find this art in this book disturbing, since it does show some of the fighting and battlefields both during and after the battle was over.

That being said, it’s also impossible to talk about graphic novels without bringing up the art. I’m not really a fan of monochromatic art (if you’re going to do a graphic novel in color, shouldn’t it have more than one color?), but I think the blue-toned artwork is appropriate for the subject. There isn’t anything particularly outstanding about the art either, (Lincoln kind of scared me) although it certainly wasn’t bad.

Overall, this is great book for those who’d like to learn a little bit about the Battle of Gettysburg and have a hard time digesting boring history books. The cast of characters and author’s notes will help guide readers through the battle enough to get them to separate fact from fiction. This isn’t going to give you an in-depth account by any means, but some knowledge can be gleaned from the content for sure. Really, this is more of a tribute to the monument of Gettysburg, as opposed to the actual battle, so despite being a book about war it ends on a relatively hopeful note.

So it's been awhile since I've participated in Poetry Friday. And I'm taking the easy way out by posting music lyrics again. But there's a little bit of a story behind this.

If you've a few posts back, you'll notice I had a great deal of trouble posting earlier this week. Well, my initial intent was the spend the whole week celebrating Abraham Lincoln and related subjects because 1) tomorrow is the 4th of July and 2) today marks the anniversary of the last day of the battle of Gettysburg. So instead today will kick off the themed week, and you can expect some Lincoln/Gettysburg stuff in the coming week.

But back to the song. You know how sometimes the lyrics to a song really hit you? Not necessarily the song itself, but the actual words being sung? That's how I feel about this song. I comes from an animated hero movie that I had growing up. But although I don't really remember most of the movie, this song continues to come to mind.

I've always deeply admired Abraham Lincoln. The Gettysburg is one of my favorite speeches because it's so simple it's complex. One day I was listening to this song and I had the idea to put the two together to video. So here's the end result. My very first time editing together a video (so be nice!). And below it you'll find the lyrics to the song that comes at the end.

How to fix a Blogger problem

So I just got off the phone with Comcast, and I think (fingers crossed) the problem is 100% fixed now.

I consider myself to be fairly tech savvy, but the problem was something I had never had any clue about, so I figured I would share my solution in case someone else ever has this problem.

I tried deleting my cache/cookies, switching browsers, updating my software, everything I could think of. So when I switched internet connections and blogger loaded fine, I knew it was my internet connection. But here's what I didn't know. Since our house has a wireless router, pages can get "stuck" in the router just like they can get stuck in your browser. So although I was clearing my computer's cache, the pages still wouldn't update. So by resetting my router, it took care of the problem.

Anyway, I really hope that was the full problem and something doesn't come back to bite me later.

I managed to get down to a coffee shop and get connected to Blogger. So it's definitely the internet connection at my house. Comcast is going to get an irate call when I get home...

Anyway, I had a whole patriotic theme planned for this week, seeing as Saturday is the 4th of July. But since I can only access the internet I don't know how much I will be able to get done. So instead, my themed week will start on Friday. I'm going to close the Catching Fire contest right now, and the winner will go up tomorrow. A new Contest Monday will go up on the 6th, rather than me trying to play catch up.

So that's if for now. Off to call the internet company...
